Meredith was rejected twice. Then he filled a complaint with the district court on 31st of May 1961. He thought that he was being denied because of his color. By a 2 to 1 decision the judges decided that Meredith had indeed been refused admission solely because of his race and that Mississippi was maintaining a policy of educational segregation. Education in such a big deal with the civil rights movement beacause black people had such a hard time getting into schools because so many were racist.
